IN THE MOMENT FILMS is creating a feature-length (60-90 minute) documentary film about the untold stories of the African-American and Native Americans whose families have resided primarily in the Wilkes county region of Georgia and beyond. (Title to be determined.)
The town of Washington has a rich historical background, and will serve as the centerpiece of the film. Stories will span from the Revolutionary war, through the civil war and move well into the civil rights movement--with these historical events serving as a framework to highlight perspectives that have been overlooked, or have gone unreported by news sources.
The city of Washington and the Wilkes County area have played an important role in the history of our nation. From the battle for our freedom to the present day, it has been at the heart of all that makes us who we are as a nation. Many of those who lived through these important periods are gone but there is an opportunity to capture the first-hand accounts and accounts told through familial generations to preserve these precious stories and share them with a wider audience. This is an opportunity to help those who have lived in Washington-Wilkes for generations as well as those who are newcomers, to have a better understanding of the fabric of our community. It is also an opportunity to learn more about one another and make Washington-Wilkes an example of a community that recognizes its full history, including African American and Native American contributions and culture. This is a project that will highlight the important contributions of citizens who have been recognized in the past as well as those who have been under-recognized and in doing so, remind us that we are all connected and vital to this very unique place in America.
Historical context is important and truth-telling is critical to begin reparations and healing in the African American community. It is our hope that those who have been underrepresented will feel as though they are seen and heard in this film and anthology, and to create a more connected, empathetic community in Washington, Georgia, and across the nation.
The mission of IN THE MOMENT FILMS is to provide filmmaking opportunities behind the camera as well as in front of the camera for women, and to make films on socially significant topics.
An anthology of stories will also be written and printed in conjunction with the film. There will be a red-carpet screening and book launch for the public in Washington—the hope is that this event will bring together members of the community from diverse backgrounds.
